Indoor Saunas
How much space do I need for an Indoor Sauna?
1. minimum distances for ventilationThe following guide values apply for sufficient ventilation and to avoid moisture damage:
- to interior walls: approx. 5-10 cm
- to exterior walls: min. 10 cm
- to the ceiling: min. 10 cm
Some insulated premium systems manage with smaller distances.
2. space for use and maintenance
- in front of the sauna door: approx. 60 cm free space
- Control and maintenance points must remain accessible
3. space requirement in the interior
- approx. 1-1.5 m² per person
- 2 Persons: approx. 2-3 m²
- 4 Persons: approx. 4-6 m²
An inside length of approx. 200 cm is recommended for loungers.
4. room height & floor
- recommended room height: at least 10 to 15 cm higher than the sauna height
- Floor: flat and waterproof (e.g. tiles, stone)
Which rooms are suitable for an Indoor Sauna?
Dry indoor spaces such as cellars, bathrooms, living rooms or attics are suitable. The decisive factors are adequate ventilation, compliance with wall clearances and a suitable power connection. A window is not required.
Can I install an Indoor Sauna in a rented apartment?
Yes, many Indoor Saunas can be dismantled and are suitable for rental apartments. The prerequisites are suitable power connections, adequate spacing and ventilation. The consent of the landlord is recommended.
What power connection and heater output do I need?
Power connection
- Sauna heaters over 3 kW require a 400 V power supply
- Connection exclusively by an authorized specialist company
Rule of thumb oven performance
- approx. 1 kW per 1 m³ sauna volume
- additional approx. +1 kW per m² glass surface
- for solid wood saunas approx. +10-15 %
Does an Indoor Sauna cause damp or mold?
With correct ventilation, sufficient wall spacing and regular airing after the sauna, no harmful moisture is produced. With proper planning, Indoor Saunas are not considered critical for living spaces.
How loud is an Indoor Sauna in operation?
Indoor Saunas work almost silently. The heater itself is silent, only the control unit or fan in bio/combi heaters are slightly audible. The volume is suitable for living rooms.
How long does it take to heat up and what are the operating costs?
- Heating time: approx. 30-45 minutes, for complete warming approx. 45-60 minutes
- Power consumption: approx. 6-9 kWh per sauna session
The actual costs depend on the heater performance, insulation and service life.
Which type of sauna is right for me?
- Finnish sauna: approx. 80-100 °C, dry heat
- Bio-Sauna: approx. 50-60 °C, higher humidity
- Combination sauna: flexible between dry & wet
- Infrared: mild deep heat
Combination saunas are considered to be particularly versatile and beginner-friendly.
What are common causes of a sauna not heating up properly or smelling?
Typical causes are
- Oven output too low
- Dirty or saturated sauna stones
- Insufficient ventilation
- Technical defects (e.g. heating elements)
Many problems can be solved without replacing the heater.
Infrared cabins
What needs to be considered when installing an Infrared Cabin?
Installing an Infrared Cabin is usually straightforward, as pure infrared models do not require any special wall clearances or floor requirements. They can be installed on most flat surfaces and only require a suitable power connection. Additional safety distances and heat-resistant floor solutions are only necessary if the Infrared Cabin is combined with a Finnish Sauna Heater. In this case, similar requirements apply as for classic Finnish saunas, such as a minimum distance of approx. 5–10 cm from the wall. Overall, infrared saunas are much easier and more flexible to install than Finnish saunas.
What types of infrared heaters are available and how do they differ?
The most common types of infrared heaters are full-spectrum and quartz heaters. Full-spectrum heaters cover a wide range of infrared waves and generate particularly intense deep heat. Quartz heaters react very quickly and deliver high, localized heat output. The choice of emitter type influences the sensation of heat and the intensity of the application. Depending on the area of application and personal comfort, different emitters may be preferred.
Can infrared saunas also be used commercially, and what needs to be taken into account?
Pure infrared saunas can generally also be used commercially, whereby there are usually no additional structural requirements apart from the general hygiene regulations. The situation is different for combination models with Finnish Sauna Heater, as additional safety requirements apply here. In this case, an emergency stop switch is required inside the cabin, as well as a minimum distance of approximately 5–10 cm from the wall. These measures serve to ensure user safety and protect against moisture damage.
What are the health benefits of an infrared sauna compared to a Finnish sauna?
Infrared saunas generate deep penetrating heat, which can have a particularly positive effect on muscles, joints, and bones. They are often used for relaxation, regeneration, and relief of muscular tension. Finnish saunas with stoves have a stronger effect on the cardiovascular system and can strengthen the immune system and promote blood circulation. In addition, regular Finnish sauna use can have a positive effect on blood pressure. Both types of sauna offer different health benefits and can complement each other perfectly.
What kind of power connection do infrared saunas require?
Infrared saunas are usually operated via a 230V light current connection. If the infrared sauna is combined with a Finnish stove, a 400V power connection and corresponding electrical installation are also required. The exact type of connection depends on the respective model and power output. The electrical equipment should be checked by a specialist before installation. The manufacturer's technical specifications are decisive in this regard.
How many infrared heaters are needed in an infrared sauna?
The number of infrared heaters depends on the size of the cabin and the number of users. Since modern heaters usually cover entire areas of the body such as the back or legs, one or two optimally placed heaters per person are usually sufficient. The right positioning is crucial for even heat distribution. Larger cabins or higher performance requirements may require additional heaters. The exact design depends on the model and manufacturer.
